DWB...it's a scary thing
|
I can finally ride thru the hood (which is conveniently located right by my job) without constantly looking to make sure I am doing the speed limit. I cant tell you how many times over the last two months I had to turn down the first street in sight out of fear the cop behind me would get a good look at my expired tags. I guess I would not have been so scared if it was just my tags that were expired, but I had an expired drivers license too. I was talking to my (white) co-worker this morning and I was telling her how relieved I felt now that I finally got my tags and license taken care of. She mentioned that her tags were expired too but she was not worried about getting pulled over. I had to remind her the difference between me and her. I hate that it comes down to the whole color issue but the truth is DWB (driving while black) is all to common in Sacramento. Of course my co-worker disagrees and does not think that it happens. But I had to pull out the statistics that I saved from a newspaper article I read in the beginning of the year. She was shockedto say the least. She had no idea such non-sense took place on a regular basis. In the back of my head I was thinking, Of course you have no clue, it does not happen to you or any of your friends because you are white. Although I wanted to point out the obvious lack of knowledge on her part, I just kept my mouth shut. I was a little disturbed when she said, That is really unfortunate that stuff like that goes on. But I guess its a fact of life. The truth is if more people like her were aware of what was going on, it would not have to be a fact of life. If more people stood up and called attention to the problem, then maybe it would not be a constant problem that black people (and other minorities) experience on a daily basis. Although I am a black women and an educated one at that, I cant help but think if I would have gotten some leniency from a police officer if I was to get pulled over with expired tags and license. Im sure if I was a black male there would be no mercy.but what about an educated black female, with a good job and decent car. Just something that makes you go hmmmm. Im just relieved that I did not have to find out the answer to that question the hard way. |
